Certified Food Protection Manager Program
(formerly known as Qualified Food Operator (QFO) Certification)
Ledge Light Health District offers ServSafe®, a nationally recognized food safety education program developed by the National Restaurant Association. ServSafe® meets the Connecticut Public Health Code 19-13-B42 requirements for Qualified Food Operator (QFO) Certification for food service establishments and the FDA food code for Class II, III, and IV starting July 1, 2018.
Our ServSafe® Certification and Re-Certification programs are taught by skilled Environmental Health Specialists. Our instructors are experts in food safety and foodborne illness prevention and are State of Connecticut licensed sanitarians and certified food inspectors.
ServSafe® Certificate and Re-certification programs are $180.00 per person. The 8-hour class includes a ServSafe® textbook, examination and 5-year certificate of completion. You should obtain the textbook two weeks in advance of the class in order to prepare for the exam; after you register and pay you can pick the book up at our office in New London or it can be mailed to you for an additional $7.50.

If you have taken the class through LLHD and did not pass the exam, you will be required to pay a $90 re-test fee.
If you have an expired certificate or have not previously trained through LLHD, you will be required to attend the class and pay the $180 fee.
If you miss a scheduled class, please call us at (860) 448-4882 to schedule another class, as you will not be guaranteed a spot in the next class.
All classes are held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City of Groton Municipal Building, 295 Meridian Street, Groton, Connecticut 06340 unless otherwise noted. Pre-registration is required.
Community Accessible Food Service Education Program
As part of our on-going efforts to educate the public and our food service establishment partners, Ledge Light Health District offers on-site foodservice training. District Sanitarians will visit your food service establishment and provide refresher training for all of your foodservice workers. Or, if you prefer, you can schedule training at our facility on Broad Street in New London.
This is a three-hour, basic introductory food handler training course. The training will cover all of the basic elements of knowledge that a foodservice worker must demonstrate to be in compliance with the “on premises training records” requirements of Section 19-13-B42 of the Public Health Code for Class III and Class IV food establishments. The program covers important elements of food safety and foodborne illness prevention including time and temperature controls, personal hygiene, and cross contamination. The cost of the training is $200 for a group or an entire establishment (for onsite training).
This training is also provided to temporary event food booth operators who may need safe food handling education prior to large festivals and events such as the annual Celebrate East Lyme, Ledyard Fair, Mystic Blue Festival or Sailfest. Lastly, the CAFE Program can be a useful tool to assist food establishments to correct food handling behaviors and poor inspection scores during routine compliance inspections.
This class is not ServSafe or Certified Food Protection Manager training.
