2025 Mpox Season: Recommendations from the CDC

Stay Protected Against Mpox

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination for individuals at risk of Mpox to protect against infection and its complications. Mpox can cause painful skin lesions, fever, and other flu-like symptoms and may lead to severe outcomes in immunocompromised individuals.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The Mpox vaccine is recommended for those at higher risk, including:

  • Individuals who have known or suspected exposure to Mpox
  • People with multiple or anonymous sexual partners
  • Healthcare and laboratory workers handling Mpox specimens
  • People with weakened immune systems, including those with HIV

When to Get Vaccinated

The vaccine should be administered as soon as possible after potential exposure. For those at ongoing risk, vaccination is recommended before exposure. The vaccine requires two doses for full protection, spaced at least four weeks apart.

Additional Prevention Tips

  • Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with individuals who have Mpox-like rashes or lesions.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Do not share bedding, clothing, or utensils with infected individuals.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for someone with Mpox.

Mpox and Other Infections

Mpox symptoms can resemble other illnesses, and testing may be needed for an accurate diagnosis. The Mpox vaccine does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so individuals should also consider routine STI screenings.
